The Oscar-nominated flick The Fighter hit our screens this week and it was outstanding!
The boxing movie is based on a true story, it portrays the early years of boxer Micky Ward and his brother, who helped train him before going pro in the mid '80s. Mark Whalberg puts on the boxing gloves in this flick while Christian Bale plays his older, troubled brother.
Anyone who's seen the flick you tell you the same thing... Christian Bale steals the show. He's already won Best Actor at the Golden Globes and at the Screen Actor's Guild Awards, and is tipped to win the same award at The Oscars. He has always been an amazing actor, films such as Breaking Dawn and The Machinist portraying the true passion he has for his art, so it's great that he's finally getting recognized.
Mark Whalberg also shone threw in this movie. He's definitely stepped up his game and although he hasn't been nominated for Best Actor at the Oscars, nominations at the SAG awards and the Golden Globes have proved that he too is being noticed for his talents.
So what's the movie like? Well similar to Million Dollar Baby there is a lot of focus on the boxing but Micky's personal life becomes the main focus. Micky's brother, who taught him how to box, is going off the rails and he's constantly loosing fights. The film centres on Micky's rise to his World Champion status and the rocky road he took to get there.
The movie has 7 nominations at the Oscars including Best Movie, Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress for Melissa Leo who plays Micky's mother, another amazing performance in the flick.
There's lots of action, randomly loads of funny scenes and a heart-felt undertone. There's a few heart-wrenching moments but as well as shedding tears you'll leave the cinema laughing with a smile on your face.
Excellent performance from Christian in this one, Mark maybe could have stepped it up a little bit more, for that reason I'm giving this movie a rating of:
9/10
