December Star Of The Month - Emma Waldron

December Star Of The Month

- Miss Ireland - Emma Waldron -

When you imagine the Miss World contest, it's easy to imagine backstage bitchiness, jealousy and egotism but Emma Waldron will tell me that she wasn't involved in any of those things... and I believe her. The Irish beauty is nothing what you would imagine her to be. She is humble, shy and so grateful for her title. It definitely seems like the whirlwind journey she's been taken on hasn't affected her personality in anyway. The Waterford born girl remains grounded and thankful, after being named the fourth most beautiful woman in the world (could you say the same?).

Emma tells me at the start of the interview that she still "can't believe" what's happened to her. She admits that her life has taken a completely different direction and she's excited to go with the flow:
"A scout came up to me when I was in Waterford with my friends and asked me would I take part in the competition. I was teaching at the time and I was due my inspection from the board of education so it was such a crazy time to happen. I never expected to get anywhere with it"

This wasn't the first time Emma had been noticed for her beauty. While dancing at a nightclub in Dublin, top Irish photographer Lili Forberg spotted her modelling potential and ,on the dance floor, asked Emma to model for her. Emma said she was shocked and couldn't believe someone thought she had such high potential, and weeks later she scored the cover of U magazine. Little did she know that soon she would be crowned Miss Ireland and come within the top five of Miss World.

Emma says that when she was crowned Miss Ireland she was in such shock that she didn't even hear her name being called out:
"I didn't even know that they were talking about me, I was in utter shock, it was something I never imagined that could be possible".

After beating off thirty other girls in the Miss Ireland contest, Emma had only nine days to get ready for the finals in China. She had to organize flights, dresses and vaccinations, all while trying to let the fact that she won Miss Ireland sink in. The trainee teacher spent nearly five weeks in China visiting different towns and attending events. The 21-year-old admits that the whole experience was a dream come true:
"It was so exciting, it was definitely something I had never imagined doing before, I never thought it was possible"

The Irish beauty says that she thought she had such a slim chance of making the top 25 of the competition, but she was fast-tracked after winning the title of Miss World Talent. Emma played a piece on her violin that wowed both the audience and the judges. She admits music is a passion of hers, playing since the age of seven:
"I am so fascinated by music. I used to play with the Dublin Orchestra and the National Symphony Orchestra. Now I play with the Hibernian Orchestra in Dublin. I was also involved with the Phoenix Training Orchestra. Which helps young people trying to get in to Orchestra's. It helps young musicians become professionals and they can learn the skills they need to progress in to an Orchestra".
So Emma said once she won the title of Miss World Talent she felt that she had accomplished so much already.

But the judges clearly saw that sparkle in her eye that I see now. Her beauty is so natural, with clear olive skin, deep blue eyes and long flowing fair hair, there's no way she was going to be left out of the top five most beautiful women in the world. It's clear from her recent modelling pictures that she was born to be in front of the camera. Emma came fourth in the universal competition, making her country extremely proud and opening new doors that would lead to amazing opportunities for the student teacher.

I ask Emma why she chose teaching as her profession. She admits that she wasn't always so sure about what she wanted in life:
"I was really interested in Music and Irish too and I did that in Trinity Dublin for a year. Then I decided I wanted to either do medicine or teaching. I chose teaching because it is a passion of mine, and If I want children in the future it would be an easier career to have".

But now thanks to her title and universal coverage, the world is now her oyster and she said she's so excited about future opportunities:
"My life has kind of turned itself on it's head! Now I'm trying to figure out what I really want to do with my life, now that these doors have been opened. It's really exciting, because there are so many new things I can do now. Everything has changed... but in a really good way. I will go back and finish my degree in teaching, it is a calling I have. But I would like to go in to TV presenting too".

One thing I had to ask Emma was how she keeps that amazing body in shape. I asked all you readers to post your questions and the winner was 'SarahLou22' who asked how does Emma keep herself looking fit. When I ask her the question Emma says her weight and body shape aren't that important to her:
"It's not something I rate with high importance. Before I went to China I did try to eat healthier; eating more vegetables, Protein and cutting down on Carbohydrates. But honestly, when I came back I ate the exact same, I probable even eat worse now! I think people shouldn't focus as much on weight as they do. I was one of the curvier girls in the Miss World contest and I came in fourth place, which I think is a really positive thing".

There is a lot of focus put on creating a modelling career for almost all the women crowned Miss Ireland. Last years winner of Miss Universe Ireland, Rozanna Purcell, is currently in New York on a full time modelling contract, and Rosanna Davison, who previously won Miss World, has spent the last few years modelling and attending events. But when I ask Emma what she wants to acheive during her reign as Miss Ireland she tells me that she wants to use her title to give coverage to the charities that are close to her heart. Most important to her is St. Vincent De Paul, she has volunteered with the charity since the age of 16 and is a huge supporter of Ozanam House; is a youth group run by Saint Vincent de Paul for children in inner city Dublin. Since winning her title Emma has used her high profile to encourage more people to donate to the charity, especially throughout Christmas:
" The 5th to the 12th of December is St. Vincent De Paul week and if I can even get just one more person to donate to the charity I will be so proud. I want to be remembered for making a real difference, or at least trying to"

Finally I ask Emma what advice she has for young people trying to achieve the amazing profile that Emma has beautifully blossommed in to. She tells me that she's a true believer of positive thinking. And that every one should take a chance on their dreams:
"One day your whole life can change and be turned upside down. So when people email me and ask me how can they get into similiar competitions I tell them 'Go for it!' because you never know what's going to happen. You will never know what opportunities could come your way. I think you should never give up, and always stay positive".
Emma also says that staying in school is really important for attaining your dream career. She believes young people should keep their head down and work as hard as they can. You can tell that teaching reall is, as she said "a calling" of hers. Her priority in life is to help others acheive their best and give chances to those who need help.

I have to say that I am extremely proud that such a nice young woman is representing our country right now. With the economic crisis demolishing any good image of our country it is reassuring to see an ambassador for Ireland who's priority is to make a difference and help the Irish people.

Right before we finish the interview Emma excitedly tells me that she found out she scored the highest points out of all the Miss Ireland entries. Something she should be really proud of. This fairytale has not ended yet for Miss Ireland, it's obvious there is a lot more left for her to give.

Emma tells me that she does not know what the future holds for her but whatever opportunities that come her way she will grab them with full force and make the most out of her experiences. She is definitely living proof that you can have both beauty and brains, that anyone can achieve their dreams, and that with a positive outlook your entire life can change.

Emma would love if you could contribute in anyway to Saint Vincent De Paul. Click on the link below to find out information on how you can help out this Christmas:
