What a shocker!
According to reports today, actress Samantha Womack, who plays Ronnie in EastEnders walked off the set yesterday and qiut her job!
It's now been revealed that Samantha actually first handed in her resignation when she first got the script for the 'baby-swap' storyline, but producers persuaded Sam to stay on to finish out the story.
BBC today confirmed that Sam will leave the show at the end of the current baby swap storyline. A source close to the actress said playing Ronnie these past few months has been devastating:
"The last couple of months at work have been awful for Sam. The first time she read the script, she thought it was wrong and pushed boundaries too far. It was such a sensitive issue, she knew it would cause a huge backlash. She wrote a letter on the day she read it and made it clear to bosses she thought it was wrong. They persuaded her to stay and film the scenes, but she will leave in May. It was draining for her filming the scenes and incredibly difficult emotionally."
Apparently producers offered Sam more money and promised to giv eher 'lighter' storylines but thr 38-year-old refused. Saying that she was "a mother first and an actress second"
An EastEnders rep said today:
"The current storyline allows an exit for Ronnie Branning. Samantha Womack has been a major part of the show's success in recent years and she will continue to work with us until her departure later this year."
